The most underrated garden vegetables?

Grow more with less effort

Most people start vegetable gardening with tomatoes or squash. Transplants are plentiful in nurseries, and they're often the first vegetables that come to mind, but these plants are high-maintenance. If you're thinking of expanding your vegetable garden, but you want to avoid adding more work to your already full plate, look no further than onions and garlic.

Onions and garlic are the most frequently used vegetables in your kitchen, and the plants are mostly hands-off once you understand what they need to thrive.

If you love to cook and are looking for some hassle-free vegetables to add to your garden, take a lunch break with me this Friday at noon for my "Awesome Alliums" class.

After you take this class, you will be confident in growing these remarkable plants. You'll learn:

  • The types of onions and garlic that work best in North Texas
  • How to grow BIGGER bulbs
  • Ornamental varieties for color and beauty
  • The curing and storage process step-by-step

Can't make it live on Friday? No problem.

All Dallas Garden School classes are recorded, and registered students have unlimited access to the replay. This class will also be available as a PODCAST EPISODE! Listen while you're in the car, taking a walk, or cooking in the kitchen.

I still have so many onions from the May harvest, and these will stay good through December. I love grabbing an onion from the garage fridge whenever I need one. ⬇️

I love my Drumstick Alliums. They will always have a place in my garden. In class, I'll give you some pointers about how to plant themfor maximum wow-factor. They're also a favorite of legendary landscape designer Piet Oudolf. ⬇️

As you start to plant things for fall*, here are some things to keep in mind... Your soil is likely fairly tired after the spring season. We had lots of rain and early heat. Give your soil a refresh with some good compost after you pull out your spring crops and before you plant your fall stuff. I usually mix about one bag (2 cu. ft.) into the top 6-8 inches of soil for every 9 square feet of garden space for a mid-crop boost. This morning, after hand watering the front display garden and...
